Newly Elected SC Rep. David W. Martin Seeks Change After York County Crossing Guard Severely Injured by Motorist

Our David W. Martin Accident & Injury Lawyers’ managing attorney, firm founder, and newly elected South Carolina House of Representative District 26, David W. Martin, recently shared with WSOC TV how our legal skills and resources allow us to pursue justice for Leslie Richardson, while his new position in the State House can help him pursue real change for pedestrians throughout South Carolina.

Our client, Leslie Richardson, is a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed interacting with the kids while working as a crossing guard at Catawba Ridge High School in Fort Mill before her life was changed when she was hit by a car while working in York County.

Crossing Guard Severely Injured by Motorist

She survived but received severe injuries and was sent to the intensive care unit, where she had emergency surgery. While her long-term prognosis is not fully clear yet, she will be dealing with the aftermath of these injuries going forward, as she has a long road to recovery.

Tragically, this was not the first time a South Carolina crossing guard was struck by a vehicle this year. In March, another crossing guard, Stanley Brucker, was struck and killed by a car outside of Fort Mill Elementary and Fort Mill Middle schools.

While our law firm does everything possible to ensure our clients can seek justice for their damages and regain control of their life, we also work for long-term change.

How Pedestrian Accidents Shake South Carolina Families, Schools, and Communities

When a crossing guard or any pedestrian is hit or killed by a vehicle, the impact ripples far beyond the individual, deeply affecting families, schools, students, and South Carolina communities as a whole.

For families, such a tragedy brings devastating loss and grief, often accompanied by financial hardship.

In schools, the absence of a trusted crossing guard or community member creates a void in safety and emotional support, as these individuals are often familiar faces who help children feel secure. Students may struggle to understand or cope with the event, feeling fearful or anxious about their safety near traffic.

Communities, too, bear the weight of such incidents. These tragedies underscore the need for greater awareness and road safety measures, ultimately impacting the collective sense of security and unity within neighborhoods across South Carolina.

David Martin’s interview with WSOC TV reinforces the impact and his role in helping:

“We’re going to do everything to make sure that everybody remains safe, our kids, our crossing guards, our kids, our volunteers. We have to make sure that we hold the people responsible for it. At the end of the day, I’ve got three little girls. I’ve got one daughter that actually goes to Catawba Ridge High School, and Mrs. Richardson was her crossing guard that we would see from time to time.”

In his new role as a South Carolina State House representative, he plans to implement change from the ground up. He also plans to speak with the Department of Transportation about impactful changes that help keep pedestrians safe everywhere—including school zones where some of our most vulnerable residents are at risk.
